Make formulas (formatDate, if, get, map…) in n8n expressions
Make mappings like {{1.name}} and {{formatDate(now; "YYYY-MM-DD")}} are written in Make's formula language. The converter translates them into n8n expressions: module references become node references, arrays switch from Make's 1-based indexes to JavaScript's 0-based ones, and date formats move from Moment to Luxon tokens.
What becomes what
| Make | In n8n | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| {{1.email}}, {{3.data.items[1].id}} | $('Node').item.json.email, …items[0].id | References read the item the current one came from, like Make reads the current bundle. |
| if, ifempty, switch | Conditional expressions | Same arguments and order. |
| Text: lower, upper, trim, capitalize, startcase, length, replace, substring, indexOf, contains, split, stripHTML, escapeHTML, encodeURL, decodeURL, toString | String methods | replace converts a plain-text pattern, replacing every match. A /regular expression/ pattern needs a check. |
| Arrays: get, first, last, join, keys, map, merge, toArray, deduplicate, distinct, reverse, slice | Array methods | get and array indexes stay 1-based on the Make side and are shifted for JavaScript. |
| Math: formatNumber, parseNumber, toNumber, round, floor, ceil, abs, max, min, sum, average | Number methods | formatNumber uses Make's defaults: "," before decimals and "." between thousands unless you pass them. |
| Dates: now, timestamp, formatDate, parseDate, addSeconds … addYears | Luxon ($now, DateTime) | Format tokens are translated (YYYY → yyyy, DD → dd, dddd → cccc). |
| Keywords: emptystring, emptyarray, space, newline, tab, pi, random, erase, ignore | JavaScript values | erase and ignore become undefined, so the field is left out. |
Check after converting
- Any function not in this list is flagged in the report with the original formula, so you can rebuild it as an n8n expression.
- Time zones: formatDate with a time zone argument sets that zone; without one, n8n uses the workflow's time zone.
